Description

The square dance is like a heterotopia, where they can temporarily get rid of family chores and express themselves like a teenager.

The square dance issue is testing whether the Chinese society can find a way out of the conflicts and shape a more diverse and inclusive cultural value system.

China is rapidly entering an aging society, and the "square dance" has become a controversial focus of attention today. Behind the disputes is the mismatch between the need for public space suitable for the elderly and the existing resources, and the rise of citizens' individualized consciousness.

Beneath the vibrant and aggressive exterior of the "square dance", there are strong social needs and marginalized identities of the Chinese elderly. I try to provide a glimpse into the elderly's response to the rapid changes in China's society, politics, economy, and technology.

The rapid changes in urban space, social forms, and information dissemination methods have fundamentally shaped China's unique social scene and the way people communicate with each other in just a few decades. The collision of values is highlighted from the dimensions of class, age, and gender. The square dance, which is a hot spot in society provides a hotbed for these collisions.

Young people realize the modern superiority of themselves by shaping the square dancers as "the lagging others." The contradictions, estrangements and frictions between the two generations have intensified.

I tried to use the natural venue characteristics to host a temporary narrative interactive performance in the most conflicting square dance gathering place. Through communication and interaction, I try to ease the conflict between the two generations.
